Meditation Background
Erika has been practicing meditation for 18 years. Although her
primary background is in Tibetan Buddhism (Nyingma lineage), she
has also been influenced profoundly by Vipassana teachings. In her
classes, Erika specializes in integrating traditional Buddhist practices
with key concepts and techniques from Western Psychology to help
people navigate the challenges of daily life and work.
Erika teaches regularly at Nyingma
Institute of Tibetan Studies in Berkeley, CA and offers workshops
elsewhere on request.
• Working with Emotions
"Our emotions show us where to direct our attention; rather
than obscuring
the path, they can clarify or sharpen it." Tarthang Tulku
(1978) from Openness Mind.
Emotions can be binding and painful, but they can also be great
teachers. From our emotions we can learn what matters most to
us. By watching emotions come and go we can learn to appreciate
their transient nature and begin to be freed from our
tendencies to cling to both pleasant and unpleasant experiences.
By cultivating increased awareness and mindfulness, one can loosen
the grip that emotions have on conscious experience. Emotional
energy can be transformed into insight and productive action.
Erika Rosenberg’s courses and workshops on meditation and
emotion teach people how to make skillful use of their
emotions. Participants will be exposed to a systematic
progression of skills, from developing repose and mindfulness,
to learning how to recognize and release the sources of
misery. An emphasis is placed on the dual benefits of
cultivating awareness and an open heart. Select western psychological
concepts and exercises about emotions are integrated with contemplative
practices throughout, in classes that combine meditation practices
with discussion and informal lecture.
• Meditation, Mindfulness, and Successful
Work
Work situations present us with many challenges, both in terms
of the tasks at hand (and how difficult we find them to be) and
in terms of the social aspects of the work environment. In these
workshops you will learn how to work with mindfulness to engage
more fully with work, to recognize habitual patterns
that may impair productivity, to move through challenging problems
or interpersonal conflicts rather than meeting them with resistance,
and how to view work as an opportunity for growth. These skills
in turn lead to more fulfilling and productive work.
For most courses, no experience with meditation is necessary
for participation. Experienced meditators are most welcome.
